Z64

The Graphomat Z64 is a punch tape or punch card controlled plotter.  This machine was presented in 1961 on the Hannove exhibition. It is a plotter driven by two gears. The digital instructions on a punch tape, generated by a Zuse Z22, Z23, Z25 or Z31 comter, were tranlated by the two gears in a x- und y-movement. Theaccuracy was very high: 1/16mm and 16 different speeds in both directions were possible.

It was the last great contribution of Konrad Zuse for computing machines. All the mechanical item were designed by him.

Areas of application

Fully automatic plotting of discrete dots, arbitrary curves and explanatory symbols, e. g. for geodesy, meteorology and road construction.

On the DVD of Konrad Zuse you can see a video about the functionality of the Z64.

Comments
At this time a plotter with the highest accuracy world wide.
Imgages from top and from left to right:  Graphomat Z64, presented in 1961 on the Hannover exhibition. The gears of the Z64 contructed by Konrad Zuse.  16 relays araund the gear controlled the speed of the movements of the x- and y-axes.

The punchtapes were generated by the Z22, Z23, Z25 and Z31. The software was very flexible, look at the example.

Later, the Z64 was used in textile cpmpanies for the design of ready made cloths.
